Gluten Free Kids

Back by Popular Demand: Tiffany Janes

On Saturday, June 12th at 10am, Tiffany will be our guest speaker and will be giving away freebies to the first 50 guests as well as door prizes full of goods that are not yet available in Chattanooga. The meeting will be held in the Erlanger Hospital POB Dining Room. Come in the main entrance (not the medical mall), take a left by the information desk towards the medical mall and a left around the clothing/scrub store.

Tiffany Janes works as a gluten-free consultant with restaurants (www.glutenfreepromotions.com) and is considered the most discriminating gluten-free diner around. She doesn't let the fact that she has celiac disease keep her from enjoying life. For her, that means plenty of great meals out and traveling as often as her budget allows.

Erlanger is now officially the 1st Hospital in the United States to be Gluten Free Certified

Congratulations to the Sodexho/Erlanger Hospital Team. They have been certified from the GIG Group for their inpatient meal service. Cynthia Kupper from GIG was very impressed with their policies, Gluten Free Food Assembly Zone, training and entire Gluten Free Program. This teams preparation and execution was incredible. Erlanger is now officially the 1st Hospital in the United States to be Gluten Free Certified by GIG for inpatient meal service. The University of Chicago at Illinois Medical Center was the 1st Retail Food Service Program certified. However, they are not inpatient certified. This certification will be most important as Erlanger Hospital will be able to create a safe haven for those patients with Gluten Diet Restrictions. Thank you to these amazing people as the number of lives they will impact is immense. Your hard work means the world to me and my family.

Celiac disease affects people differently and not all symptoms are evident. Common celiac symptoms include diarrhea, stomach pain, weight loss and, in some children, delayed growth. For others, the symptoms are subtle, such as bloating or excess gas. Fatigue, weakness, joint pain and migraines are also reported, and the diagnosis is often anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, stress, or irritable bowel syndrome. Without treatment, celiac disease increases the risk of malnutrition, osteoporosis, certain digestive tract cancers and other disorders such as Type 1 diabetes and thyroid disease. Celiac disease occurs in one of 133 people and 1.5 million Americans have the disease. The only treatment is a 100% gluten free diet.

Gluten Free Chattanooga hosted its first educational and enhancement group meeting on August 25, 2009 at Erlanger Hospital. Dr. Drago Tolosa of T.C. Thompson's Children's Hospital, part of the Erlanger Health System will spoke on celiac disease, gluten intolerance, the importance of the gluten free diet and a proper diagnosis.
